Are You a Giver, Taker, or Matcher - Career Pivot

Are You a Giver, Taker, or Matcher - Career Pivot Supplier, Taker, or Matcher Is it accurate to say that you are a provider, taker, or matcher? Consider it! This is my subsequent blog entry dependent on the book Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success by Adam Grant. My last post, Weak Ties versus Strong Ties in your Job Search, came straightforwardly from this book. Suppliers Adam Grant composed: In the work environment, providers are a moderately uncommon variety. They tilt correspondence the other way, wanting to give more than they get. While takers will in general act naturally engaged, assessing what others can offer them, suppliers are other-engaged, giving more consideration to what others need from them. These inclinations aren't about cash: suppliers and takers aren't recognized by the amount they give to noble cause or the remuneration that they order from their managers. Or maybe, suppliers and takers contrast in their mentalities and activities toward others. In case you're a taker, you help other people deliberately, when the advantages to you exceed the individual expenses. In case you're a provider, you may utilize an alternate money saving advantage investigation: you help at whatever point the advantages to others surpass the individual expenses. On the other hand, you probably won't consider the individual expenses by any stretch of the imagination, helping other people without anticipating anything consequently. In case you're a supplier at work, you essentially endeavor to be liberal in sharing your time, vitality, information, aptitudes, thoughts, and associations with others who can profit by them. Gee… do you know a few suppliers? Takers Adam Grant composed: Takers have an unmistakable mark: they like to get more than they give. They tilt correspondence in their own kindness, putting their own advantages in front of others' needs. Takers accept that the world is a serious, vicious spot. They feel that to succeed, they should be superior to other people. To demonstrate their fitness, they self-advance and ensure they get a lot of acknowledgment for their endeavors. Typical takers aren't pitiless or relentless; they're simply wary and self-defensive. Matchers Adam Grant composed: We become matchers, endeavoring to save an equivalent equalization of giving and getting. Do you want to travel the world and live your dreams when you retire If so, start saving now! - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Viewpoint careers advice blog

Do you want to travel the world and live your dreams when you retire If so, start saving now! - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Could you live on £10 a day? Two years ago I lived on the equivalent of the base state pension for a week and it was a real wake-up call as to how important it is to save for retirement. Like many things in life, it is hard to think about the end game when you are only at the beginning. However, just like when considering the future resale value of a car or a house, you need to be thinking a few years ahead. Feeling money confident Having enough money is one of the biggest causes of stress and anxiety Feeling secure and confident about not just your current financial state, but your future situation also has a huge impact on how you go about your job. Having enough money is one of the biggest causes of stress and anxiety, which in turn severely hinders how effectively you are able to do your job. The thought of having no income when I retire, and possibly no further ability to bring money in through a regular job, is scary. Thinking ahead That’s why I felt it was important to raise employee awareness of how important pensions are. Working with experts at Age UK, my team stripped out the costs that we couldn’t avoid â€" housing and travel to work â€" and arrived at a budget of £70 for 7 days.  We had strict rules and my colleagues and I did our best to abide by them. Living in London on £70 per week is not easy. Even the necessities needed a lot of forward planning and saving (the cheapest haircut I could find was £22, nearly a third of my weekly budget). Before we started our week, I asked employees to do two things, write down their aspirations for retirement (what age they wanted to stop working and how they intended to spend their time) and also to keep a record of how much they spent during a “normal” week. Most people were horrified at how much money they got through normally and how much was often wasted. Most people were horrified at how much money they got through normally Unless we start to think forward and plan for the future, retiring at 55 and travelling the world, eating out in restaurants or even just treating the grandchildren, is not going to happen. Unsurprisingly, employee pension contributions increased during the following weeks. What have you budgeted? When working out what you need during retirement try to work backwards. A simple 3 step approach to doing this would be: Work out how much everything is going to cost. For example,  I want to eat out twice a week when I retire. Eating out in a restaurant will cost me £35, so £70 if I do it twice per week. 52 weeks x £70 is £3,640 per year.  I want to go on holiday once a year. A week’s holiday might be £700. I need to eat generally â€" my weekly food bill is £50 so £2,600 per year.  Add in utility bills, clothes, haircuts, emergency funds and then total everything up. (Remember that this is a net figure after tax so you will need to gross up your final net sum to reach the pension figure you need). Look at your current pension provision â€" your employer will help you understand what it may give you â€" and see how closely it meets your total. Now think about other savings you might have, or need to make, in order to help boost this income and meet your retirement aspirations. Lessons learnt Even saving just a little more can make you feel more confident and happy I know that many people currently live on less than £70 per week; people have current financial commitments and it can be hard to save. However, for me it was a salutary lesson â€" I spend too much and waste money on things I don’t need. Most people need to make more provisions for the future, and even saving just a little bit more can make you feel more confident and happy. It’s important for your financial confidence to map out your long-term monetary plans. Knowing that whatever happens tomorrow you have some savings to fall back on helps you to feel secure in your current situation, which in turn allows you to focus all your energy on doing what you’re employed to do. Speculative cover letters What you need to know

Speculative cover letters What you need to know by Michael Cheary How do you get a job without a job advert? It’s all speculative… Unfortunately, some vacancies won’t always be advertised online. But instead of getting discouraged when your perfect position isn’t on offer, there is another way to stand out to recruiters and find a job with a company you love. We’ve already covered what cover letters are, but here’s our guide to speculative cover letters (just in case):What is a speculative cover letter?A speculative cover letter is sent alongside your CV when you apply to a company that isn’t currently advertising for staff.Rather than being written with a particular position in mind, they’re usually more tailored to the company â€" selling your skills, experience and potential should any potential vacancies arise. How to: Write a cover letter  Free cover letter templateWhat should a speculative cover letter include? OK, so the specifics of what to include will vary depending on the job you’re applying for. Not to mention where you currently are in your career. However, the format of a speculative letter will be fairly similar to a standard cover letter:Start with your personal information (e.g. name, address and contact details never include a national insurance number or bank details).Include a manager’s name (if you have it)Dear Sir/Madam (if you don’t have a name)A first main paragraph outlining what kind of role you’re looking for, and why you want to work for the companyA second paragraph explaining a bit more about your own skills and backgroundA closing paragraph to sum up why you’d be a great fit for the company, and how they could benefit from hiring youA thank you for their time, and a professional sign-off (e.g. ‘Yours faithfully’)Why should I send one?Companies may not always advertise their available roles, for a variety of different reasons. It could be that they’ve only just come up, or that they have to wait for internal applicants before putting the job out there. Or they might just not have any current vacancies on offer. However, by sending a speculative application, you can demonstrate that you’re proactive and ahead of the game when it comes to your career. And even if they don’t have any roles at the moment, you’ll ensure you’re front-of-mind if a suitable position does come up.Because the company might need you even if they don’t know it yet.Four secrets your interviewers aren’t telling youEight ways you’re selling yourself short in your job searchHow does it differ from my CV?Cover letters are important for all applications, but they take on even more importance for speculative ones.CVs tend to be rigid, professional and impersonal. In contrast, your cover letter allows you to create a rapport with the reader and showcase how right you are for the company in a much more engaging way. And, without a specific job to apply for, you need to work even harder to stand out. A well-written cover letter will talk about y our skills, previous projects and selling points, and help keep you keep front of mind if any suitable jobs do come up.How long should it be? Just over half a page of A4 â€" and no longer. It should outline why you’re a great potential hire, and what makes you a great fit for the company. It should not be War and Peace.Should I include some research about the company?Yes.Let’s face it, recruiters are as prone to flattery as anyone else. By explaining why you want to work for their company, without even knowing if there are any roles available, you instantly demonstrate that you buy in to their product or company culture.A few well-researched facts could be all it takes to back your interest up, not to mention show your dedication to the business before you’ve even joined.Big or small company: Which is right for youHow to: Research a company before you applyHow do I send a speculative application?Firstly, try and find the appropriate person to address it to (e.g. the hiring mana ger, or a member of the HR team). If you can find their email address, great. You can send it to general addresses, but it’s likely to get lost in the sea of other emails so make sure it has a killer subject line.Alternatively you can post the application, if you have the company’s address. What do I do next? Now you wait.Usually the company will get in touch, to let you know whether they have any available positions, and if your application has been successful. However, this could take a little time to come through.Alternatively, contacting the recruiter a few weeks after you send it is a great way to find out if they received your speculative cover letter and CV, as well as getting constructive feedback.Remember: speculative cover letters won’t always work. But you won’t know until you try. After all, what have you got to lose?Four ways to follow-up after an applicationStill searching for your perfect position?  View all of our current vacancies now

How to Prevent Personal Brand Injury [4 Steps]

How to Prevent Personal Brand Injury [4 Steps] Have you experienced personal brand injury? When you decide to embark on the personal branding process you are so  energized to do as much as you can to be your brand.  The process is motivating  as you start to see  the fruits of your labor and the results of your hard work. However, along the way you may suffer from a setback â€" something that has perhaps caused a strain in your personal branding effort. In such cases, you need to avoid the temptation to push forward and risk personal brand injury. Here are 4 areas you should not rush into when branding yourself. Take appropriate breaks and recover before risking personal brand injury. 1.  Your  Brand Colors Do the colors you use reflect your brand attributes?  For example if your brand is seen as “passionate”, “energetic”, and “active”, are you using RED? If others see you as “mysterious” and “spiritual” are you using PURPLE? Are your colors culturally appropriate for your target audience? I recently noticed that 4 different sites to hire freelance professionals all  use the color blue in their logos. This actually makes perfect sense as blue represents ‘authority,’ ‘integrity’, ‘trust’ and ‘loyalty’ â€" all the brand attributes you would want in a person you hire for a freelance  project. 2. Your Brand Logo / Slogan The heart of your visual personal brand is your logo and slogan.  Once you launch your logo and slogan they immediately become your brand identity. Make sure you have invested the time in selecting the best logo, image/icon, and slogan  to represent you.  Hire a professional to design a bunch of options,  select a handful that  you like, and then informally survey  people in your target audience.  Always inquire as to why they prefer a particular logo or slogan  over the other choices. Look  for consistency in their feedback. Do your options  clearly articulate the brand  message you want  to express?  If not, take a break, recover  and start again before injuring your personal brand. Trying to revamp a published  logo and slogan  later on will prove to be a big nightmare! 3.  Your Website or Blog A great way to prevent personal brand injury to to make sure your brand has a strong core such as a website or blog. To develop this strong core you must be able to answer the following questions and develop your site/blog around these answers. What are the goals for your site? Who is your audience? What are their needs? What  thought leadership content can you give to  meet these needs? Who are competitors and how will your site stand out? What  visual vocabulary will the site have to show  your brand? (colors, style, logo, etc) If you are not ready to invest in a website, or if you are not interested in blogging, then at least set up a personal portal on About.me,  Flavors.me, Pitch Engine, Profiled.com, or Vizify. These can function as your website.  Just keep in mind that these portals also need to have a strong core that sends out the right visual  message for your brand. 4.  Your ‘About’ Page and Bio Your about page is usually the first page on your website or blog that people will visit to learn about you and make that critical decision to connect and  do business with you. It may be the only  page they will  use to decide  if it is worth spending their  time to either  click on your  other links, or “bounce” off  your site. The same goes for your bio on a personal portal site.  Take the time to create a branded bio that captures your authenticity and story. By uncovering and including your story, you can truly provide that emotional hook to draw people into your brand. Do you have any other suggestions to prevent personal brand injury? Hey Dude, I Just Quit My Job! Wait, You Did WHAT

Hey Dude, I Just Quit My Job!” “Wait, You Did WHAT”   People don’t just quit. Put another way, thoughtful people don’t just quit their jobs on the spur of the moment. They plan when to resign, how to resign and what to do after they resign. There is an art to resigning, and those who choose to ignore well-tested methods and safeguards do so at great peril. Many a job change has been ruined by what happens when an employee walks into his supervisor’s office and announces that he’s quitting. Resigning has a number of very discreet, very definable parts. You need to minimize any missteps when resigning to ensure that you don’t leave in a way that creates costly, disruptive litigation and business problems at the new company.  Let’s focus here just on the act of resigning itself.  1. You need to pick the day on which to resign. (Hint: It’s not Monday.) Okay, enough suspense. People should resign on Friday. Why? “Because then they can race out the door and get a wicked good head start at their next job!” WRONG. Friday resignations serve a very important purpose: they allow time for things to calm down, both at the company you left and at the company you’re joining. If you resign, for example on a Monday, the emotions of the moment will fester and escalate throughout the week. 2. What’s the best time to resign? “When my supervisor is away on a golf trip with her best friends!” WRONG. Avoid the pitfall of slipping out in secret, and absolutely  never  quit when your manager is doing something that’s personally important to her. Why? As a threshold matter, except in the rarest of circumstances, you need to resign to someone with the authority to  accept  your resignation. Marking the resignation is important for all sorts of other reasons, ranging from triggering your rights to final compensation to establishing the time when you can start working for the next company.  If you sneak out, let alone sneak out while your manager is trying to sink a long putt on the ninth green, no good will come of it. Moreover, as regards the manager, you put her in a terrible position: does she leave her friends and attend to the fallout of a direct report quitting, or does she stay and potentially risk the wrath of her supervisor for not immediately addressing the business disruption? Putting managers to such choices at best creates professional enemies for the rest of your business life. 3. What do you say when you resign? “This place is awful and will never survive because it has no idea how to take care of its top people.” WRONG. In the moment of resigning, people have the urge to speak and, oftentimes, to speak negatively (they call it “just being honest”). Don’t speak. You are in your manager’s office for one reason and one reason only: to say, “I’m resigning.” As they warn on the television programs, “Everything you say can and will be used against you!”  The real reason to speak as little as possible when you resign is that there’s nothing you can say that will fix anything. At the moment of resigning, there are certain unalterable truths: you are leaving, you are joining a competitor, and your joining a competitor will hurt both the company you’re about to leave and the manager to whom you’re resigning. Talk, any talk, cannot change those things. It can only make matters worse. So, if you really like your manager, if he really is your “best buddy” (which, as you can tell from my sarcasm is almost never the case), then speak later, once things settle, because at the time you quit, his job is to protect his company and his own employment, and not have some group hug time with you. 4. What should a letter of resignation say? Okay, by this time, if you need me to give you the “wrong” answer, then you really aren’t ready to leave your job! Not surprisingly, a well-drafted letter of resignation mirrors what you (do not) say when you’re resigning. It’s short and to the point and contains almost nothing beyond new contact information.  â€œWait! You want me to tell them where I’m going? What kind of advice is that?!!” It’s the right kind of advice. Take a step back and remember how the table is set: you’re in a small and shrinking industry and you’re going to work for a direct competitor. Do you think there is any chance they won’t know where you went to work in a matter of minutes?  Always state where you’re going. Why? Because, as I said, they’ll find out so just say it, and also because people who hide that information (especially when asked, and you’ll always be asked) look like they’re doing something wrong (and you’re not, provided that you prepared to leave in the right way). So, don’t be the “dude” who just up and quits. Before resigning, make sure you’ve carefully planned out the well-defined actions that make up a proper and successful resignation. Now, it’s time to go knock on your manager’s door.  This guest post was authored by Steven L Manchel Steven L.
